Reentering society after your prison sentence

| Jun 2, 2020 | Criminal Defense |

After your release from prison in New York, you may encounter difficult challenges, but with persistence and determination, you have the potential to create an exciting and rewarding new life. Preparing for life after prison and goal setting are things you can do during incarceration.

Common barriers to reentering society affect many people who spend time in prison. As you transition into life outside of your cell, remember that you are not alone.

Identifying common challenges

You may find that picking up right where you left off is impossible. In fact, you may no longer desire to associate with certain people or participate in certain behaviors or social groups, especially if certain influences may trigger an unhealthy emotional response. Being prepared to cope with challenges may allow you to already have an idea of how to proceed to make progress despite the odds.

According to Rasmussen College, four common societal barriers include finding a place to live, interviewing for and finding employment, not being able to vote and pursuing an education.

Finding adequate support

One of the most worthwhile things you can do is to develop strong connections with people who are empathetic to your situation. Networking is something you can do even while you are still incarcerated. The more available and understanding your support group is, you may find that your efforts are more effective. People who you respect and trust may provide you with insight and encouragement about your choices which may increase your confidence to do the right thing.
