Man arrested for stealing $2,000 worth of Target laptops

Retail stores put a number of different preventative measures in place to avoid theft. Unfortunately, these precautions do not always keep people from stealing valuable goods. This was the situation that occurred at a local Target store.

The police recently arrested a man from South Salem, New York who stole multiple laptop computers valued at roughly $2,000. Ryan Jensen received three charges of organized retail theft of less than $10,000, fifth-degree larceny as well as fourth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny after turning himself in to police.

This process began in September 2018 when a Target store employee made law enforcement aware of the multiple stolen laptops. The employee provided information about the situation as well as three potential suspects. This led officers to review the surveillance footage provided by Target, which revealed the theft of laptops on two separate occasions.

The investigation revealed the older brother of Ryan Jensen, Michael Jensen, swiping laptops from the Target electronics department. Five videos showed him walking out of the store with the goods under his arms before escaping in a Ford Explorer or Jeep. A deeper review of the two vehicles revealed Ryan Jensen and a third suspect, Megan Rutledge, as the respective owners.

Law enforcement learned that the Jensens successfully pawned three of the stolen computers at Federal Road pawn shop in Danbury. By the time officers arrived at the pawn shop, two of the laptops were gone. The one unsold computer remaining had an orange and white Target sticker on it.

Target reported a total loss of $3,627.96 as a result of the five incidents caught on video.

Evaluating the crime

Ryan Jensen received three separate charges at the time of his arrest. The most serious of the group is organized retail theft. This is a Class D felony, which is punishable by up to seven years in prison plus fines. Fifth-degree larceny is a Class A misdemeanor while fourth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny is a Class B misdemeanor.
