Police investigate $353,000 jewelry theft at Trump Tower

Theft is a major issue across the United States and specifically in New York. The vast majority of these crimes are petty in nature. That said, there are plenty of examples of large-scale thefts that occur as well. In fact, two separate incidents at the Trump Tower in Manhattan resulted in the theft of a combined total of $350,000 of jewelry.

The first incident took place while one victim was away from her place between late June and early September. She returned to her residence on the 42nd floor to find that a ring, necklace and pair of diamond and emerald earrings were no longer there. The value of the stolen jewelry is $236,000.

A following incident occurred during early September. Again, the thief struck while the victim was out of town. The victim reported that the theft occurred after returning from a week-long vacation between September 4 and September 9. The jewelry in question has a value of $117,000.

The report states that a source believes the thefts are the result of someone breaking into the building, roaming the halls and trying doors until one is open. It is unclear whether a single theft occurred or if the stolen jewelry is a result of multiple incidents. The police have yet to identify a suspect at this time, and the investigation is currently ongoing.

Evaluating the crime

The police reported both cases as grand larceny. Grand larceny is a very serious crime in the state of New York. It is more severe based on the value of the property stolen.

In this instance, both situations would result in a Class C felony and up to 15 years in prison plus fines if convicted. This is because the value of the jewelry taken is over $50,000 but significantly less than $1,000,000, which would constitute a Class B felony conviction.
