Man accused of drug crime in New York

| Nov 23, 2018 | Drug Charges |

An out-of-state man is facing serious charges here in New York, according to officials from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. The man was arrested on Oct. 30. He faces multiple charges pertaining to allegations of drug crime and weapons. If he is found guilty, he could be faced with a hefty prison sentence.

According to officers in Southeast, who reported the arrest on Nov. 19, the 33-year-old man was pulled over around 2:40 a.m. the morning of Oct. 30. A deputy allegedly observed him commit a traffic violation of unknown type. He was pulled over in the westbound lanes of Interstate 84.

Police say the driver, a resident of Connecticut, was in possession of marijuana as well as concentrated cannabis of unknown quantities, as well as a handgun for which he could not produce a permit. It was not explained what prompted the search of the man’s person and/or vehicle, and no warrant was mentioned. The man was arrested and taken to a local jail for processing. He faces charges for possession of marijuana, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and felony criminal possession of a firearm.

It is always important for police to carefully investigate cases involving drug crime, since the penalties for these crimes in New York can be severe. It will be the job of prosecutors to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the man was in possession of the substances of which he is accused. His criminal defense team will carefully review the arrest record provided by police to assess whether due process and the man’s constitutional rights were observed.
