Twenty-eight people were recently arrested after a months-long investigation into drug dealings. The upstate New York drug squad, the Ulster Regional Gang Enforcement Narcotics Team (URGENT) made the arrests in an effort to curtail nationwide drug crime. Twenty-one men and seven women were taken into custody after authorities allegedly found they were involved in the trafficking and possession of illegal drugs, including crack cocaine, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, fentanyl and various pharmaceuticals that are illegal to sell or to possess without a prescription.
URGENT reports that it has made 130 arrests in all and seized illegal weapons and more than $123,000 in cash during the investigation. Most of those facing charges are in their 20s and 30s with two being in their 60s. Charges include criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal sale of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence, criminal possession of marijuana, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm.
In the months prior to these latest arrests, URGENT says it seized 20 heroin decks, 275 pure fentanyl decks, 28 illegal weapons and more than 840 grams of cocaine. Those facing charges will likely work alongside legal counsel in order to fight these felony charges. These are the types of charges that could radically impact these individuals' lives.
A New York defense attorney who has experience in helping those who have been accused of a drug crime may be able to mount the most aggressive defense possible for his or her clients. Each client's story is different and after reviewing evidence, a lawyer may be able to either have the charges dismissed or to have any sentence lessened in the event of a guilty verdict. Getting a lawyer's help may make a big difference in the quality of life of those charged with these types of felony crimes.
