Police say a 14-year-old Long Island girl was raped by a man she met on Snapchat assaulted her. The 28-year-old man, a resident of Brooklyn has been formally accused of rape. It is alleged that the man met with the girl on a number of occasions.
Investigators said it was during those meetings, earlier this year, that sexual intercourse took place. The girl eventually confided in her mother, who called the authorities. The man was arrested on charges of rape and criminal sexual act. He is in custody with bail set at $200,000. He was also accused of obstructing with regard to a case in New York City.
Those accused of rape would do well to obtain the counsel of an attorney with experience in criminal law. There are three degrees of rape punishable in New York — first, second and third degree. They vary in severity and an attorney will advise his or her client according the charges the client faces.
In New York, minors cannot give legal consent to sexual intercourse. Known as statutory rape, the law declares that a crime is committed whenever sex occurs between an adult and a minor under the age of 17. Those convicted of rape could face a long period of incarceration with negative impacts that could last a lifetime. An experienced attorney will work to develop a strong defense, and in those cases where the evidence appears formidable, the lawyer may seek to negotiate a plea agreement in exchange for reduced charges and/or favorable sentencing considerations.
