Officials in New York have recently reported the arrests of several people for a variety of alleged drug charges. The charges stem from an investigation of a reported overdose death nine months ago. According to authorities, the probe resulted in the discovery of a supposed trafficking ring involving several narcotics.
Police report that a 24-year-old woman overdosed in her apartment in Oct. 2016. She was transported to a nearby hospital after being given an overdose antidote by first responders. Hospital records reveal that she passed away the following day. An autopsy conducted on the woman revealed that fentanyl, cocaine and heroin were found in her body.
During the investigation of the apartment, officers found envelopes used to package the narcotics. Further investigation led police to seven suspects allegedly believed to have supplied the drugs to the woman. Undercover agents allegedly purchased over $20,000 in narcotics from the seven suspects. Some of the charges against the suspects include conspiracy and criminal sale of a controlled substance, according to a special narcotics prosecutor.
Being convicted of a drug crime such as trafficking in New York can result in serious consequences. Anyone facing those charges has the right to mount a rigorous defense. A knowledgeable criminal defense attorney will assess whether any evidence submitted was obtained legally and if proper police procedures were followed. An experienced lawyer can review each case individually and determine the best course of action. A strong defense team will work toward achieving a favorable outcome and minimizing the negative impact on a client's life.
