Avoid DUI charges on St. Patrick’s Day this year

| Mar 17, 2017 | Criminal Appeals |

You may need no reminder that today is St. Patrick’s Day. According to one set of statistics, just over 56 percent of Americans said that they expect to celebrate the holiday this year. In most cases, the celebration will revolve around (or at least include) the consumption of alcohol.

If you will be celebrating, you are probably excited about the fact that St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday this year. While that makes it easier to justify taking a few drinks, it also requires an extra word of caution: Please don’t drink and drive.

Because this holiday ranks as America’s fourth most popular drinking day of the year, law enforcement agencies in New York and around the country will be increasing anti-DUI enforcement efforts. This means that if you are getting behind the wheel tonight, your chances of being pulled over are significantly higher than normal.

Of course, you should be worried about your physical safety in addition to legal safety. During the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period in 2015, about 30 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes. Countless more were injured.

The takeaway message is simple: If you are going to drink, please plan alternative transportation home before the evening festivities begin. This could include taking the bus, a taxi or a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft. You could also coordinate a friend to serve as a designated driver.

In the end, taking these simple steps is far easier and less expensive than resolving DUI charges. That being said, you should contact an experienced criminal defense attorney immediately if you have been arrested for or charged with drunk driving.

Please have a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day!
