SERVING NEW YORK WITH INTEGRITY & COMMITMENT

College students, robbery charges, and the right defense strategy

Anybody, regardless of age or status, can make a mistake that leads to trouble with the law. This is even more so the case among college students, as these individuals don't always make the right decisions.

Are you a college student recently charged with the crime of robbery? Are you the parent of a student who has found him- or herself in this position?

As the defendant in this type of court case, it's essential to understand the many types of defense strategies that can be effective.

Some of the most common defense strategies for robbery include the following:

  • Innocence. This is exactly what it sounds like. The government must be able to prove that you committed the crime, and it's up to you and your legal team to show that this did not happen. You may be able to avoid a conviction by showing the court that the evidence does not point towards you as being the person who committed the crime.
  • Intoxication. A common strategy among college students, you must be able to prove that you were unable to make informed decisions due to your state of mind at the time of the crime.
  • Entrapment. Were you pushed by another to commit the crime? Would you have otherwise opted against this behavior had another person not persuaded you? If you answered yes to these questions, you may be able to employ an entrapment defense. It can be difficult to prove, but there are times when this strategy is the best approach.

In some cases, it may make sense to admit that you performed the actions related to the crime, while arguing that some facts should preclude you from responsibility.

Robbery is a serious crime that can lead to a variety of challenges within your life, including imprisonment, personal issues, and the inability to land a job in the future. As a college student, this is reason for concern.

If you were charged with this crime, it's time to learn more about the details of your case, including the type of defense strategy that can help you put your trouble in the past.
