Suspects sought in credit card theft ring

| Aug 4, 2016 | Theft & Property Crimes |

Several individuals are accused of operating a credit card stealing ring, using the stolen cards to purchase upwards of $30,000 worth of merchandise throughout Brooklyn. According to reports, investigators estimate that nearly 60 individuals have had their credit cards stolen by the group, many of whom are customers of Ridgewood Savings Bank.

Authorities believe that the group consists of six men and women working together, making purchases at big box stores like Macy’s and Target, while some of the purchases have been made from mom-and-pop delis and other small businesses like pet stores.

Ridgewood Savings Bank informed customers in May that their credit card accounts had been compromised, when the bank began to see a sharp increase in fraudulent charges. Neither the bank nor the police could say with certainty how the suspects were able to access the account information, but did indicate that it had been done through some form of hacking into the bank’s databases. While many instances of cybercrime stay online, this particular group of individuals chose to take the hacked credit card information and use it to make purchases at brick-and-mortar shopping locations.

Accusations of theft, whether physical or cyber, are serious matters, and should be treated as such. If and when the suspects are apprehended, they will be entitled to an excellent criminal defense. An experienced criminal defense attorney can help to ensure that the nature of their motivations is understood and that they receive fair treatment at the hands of the court, while protecting their rights.
