Manhattan dentist jailed for meth, child porn

| Nov 27, 2015 | Sex Crimes |

It is rare for a defendant to openly admit to a serious methamphetamine addiction when that person is a white collar professional. However, clearly one Manhattan dentist feels that it is the lesser of two evils compared to the child pornography charges he faces after a recent arrest.

The 59-year-old dentist was under the influence of the powerful stimulant when it’s reported that he bragged about committing acts of bestiality and exposing his intimate partners to the HIV virus by poking pinholes in condoms, his attorney said earlier this week.

“People on meth aren’t accurate historians, they exaggerate and tend to say outlandish things,” the lawyer stated. “The key to this case is he has a drug problem.”

An informant allegedly recorded the dentist’s comments, although he is not charged with anything other than the child pornography and drug offenses. The informant was reported to have exchanged methamphetamine for dental work at his dental office. A Federal Bureau of Investigation agent working undercover also allegedly taped the dentist.

There was a short detention hearing at the Brooklyn Federal Court, but the dentist’s attorneys told the magistrate that they were still working out a bail proposal. Until then, he remains in the Metropolitan Detention Center in solitary confinement for his own protection.

His criminal defense attorney also demanded that a preliminary hearing be scheduled in order to confront the witnesses for the prosecution. It is likely that federal prosecutors will move to indict the man prior to the preliminary hearing, however.

Serious cases such as any sex crimes involving children demand a vociferous defense that considers all angles of a criminal charge.
