What 3 ways do guns enter the criminal market?

| May 19, 2015 | Weapons Crimes |

One of the primary reasons for the increase in gun crime in the United States is ease of access. If a person wants a gun, he or she can likely get his or her hands on one without much hassle.

While some people purchase a gun in a legal manner, ensuring that they are licensed to carry it, others make the mistake of illegally purchasing a firearm.

According to the National Gun Victims Action Council, there are three ways guns make their way to the criminal market:

— Licensed gun dealers that make poor decisions. There are corrupt gun dealers that don’t follow the rules and regulations of the industry, thus putting guns into the hands of the wrong people.

— Private gun sales. There are private gun sales in which people illegally purchase firearms.

— Straw purchasing. A straw purchaser is defined as somebody with a clean record who purchases a gun on behalf of somebody who is unable to do so on his or her own.

Since it is so easy for most people to acquire a gun, this type of crime is sure to remain high throughout the country. Unfortunately, ease of access often leads a person down the wrong path.

When a person is charged with a gun crime, from illegal possession to illegal sale, it is important that he or she understands the legal implications. These are serious crimes that have serious consequences. Fortunately, there are legal defenses that can help a person limit his or her trouble.
