SERVING NEW YORK WITH INTEGRITY & COMMITMENT

New York State sex offender questions

The state of New York, just the same as the other 49 states, is serious about sex crimes. Anybody who is charged with a sex crime, such as sexual abuse, should be aware of what this means to them right now, as well as how it could change their life in the future if convicted.

The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services website provides a variety of information on sex crimes, including a frequently asked questions page. Some of the most common questions include:

-- What is the history of the New York State Sex Offender Registration Act? This statute has been in place since January 1996. Over the years, many changes have been made to ensure that the statute remains relevant.

-- Who is required to register as a sex offender? Anybody who has been incarcerated, on probation or on parole for a sex offense must register. Furthermore, anybody convicted of such a crime after January 1996 must register. In the event that a sex offender moves to the state from another location, they must notify the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.

-- Is there more than one level of sex offender?

In New York, sex offenders are broken down into three levels:

-- Low: level 1

-- Moderate: level 2

-- High: level 3

These questions go a long way in helping a person understand the seriousness of a sex crime. This is why anybody in this position, regardless of the charges, should be serious about understanding the law and getting the help he or she needs.
