SERVING NEW YORK WITH INTEGRITY & COMMITMENT

How to approach theft and property crime charges

Every day in New York City, people are charged with theft and other types of property crime.

When it comes to burglary and robbery charges, you must know the ins and outs of the law, including the potential consequences. Furthermore, it is a good idea to become familiar with the type of defense you can use, as this can improve your chance of avoiding serious punishment by the court system.

Convictions for burglary and robbery can carry many punishments, including a long prison sentence. Additionally, it can make it difficult for a person to obtain a job in the future.

While robbery and burglary are often times confused as being one in the same, there are distinct differences. Robbery is defined as taking property from another party with force. Burglary, on the other hand, is when a person enters a building, such as a home, without permission, with the intent to commit a crime.

The way you approach a property crime charge could be the difference between avoiding trouble with the law and ending up with a harsh sentence. For example, illegally obtained evidence can be suppressed and constitutional violations brought to light.

Even if a person commits a crime, such as robbery or burglary, it doesn't mean he or she should necessarily be sent to prison for a long period of time. There are situations in which a person is treated unfairly, such as when their constitutional rights are violated.
