What offenses belong in the sex crime category?

| Oct 23, 2014 | Sex Crimes |

It is not uncommon for a person to be charged with a sex crime despite the fact that they did not cross the “legal line.” To better understand sex crimes, it is important to know which types of offenses make up this category.

New York, as well as the other 49 states, all have laws that prohibit the many types of sex crimes. Even then, some people commit one of these crimes, sometimes without realizing they are doing so.

Here is a list of common types of sex crimes:

— Prostitution. This is the act of engaging in or offering a sexual act for payment.

— Indecent exposure. This crime comes about when a person exposes his or her genitals in public.

— Rape. There are many types of crimes that fit into this category, including statutory rape and date rape.

— Sexual assault. There are many crimes within this category, all of which are based around unwanted touching in a sexual manner.

— Solicitation. It is against the law to entice another person to commit any type of crime, such as prostitution.

These are just a few of the many types of offenses that belong in the sex crime category. As you can see by the basic description, there can be gray areas that makes it difficult for authorities to arrest somebody with full confidence.

All sex crimes are serious and can result in stiff penalties. When people are accused of such crimes, they must know their rights. A person in this position may wish to speak with a criminal defense attorney about local laws and how to move forward.
