SERVING NEW YORK WITH INTEGRITY & COMMITMENT

Sexual abuse via technology statistics

Sexual abuse comes in many forms, with technology contributing to the growth of this crime. From New York to California and all states in between, there are people of all ages using technology. For this reason, some are turning to the internet, as well as other forms of technology, such as mobile devices, to communicate with others.

The U.S. Department of Justice has shared a variety of statistics related to sexual abuse via technology. Here are some of the most startling:

-- Roughly 13 percent of youths using the internet have received an unwanted sexual solicitation.

-- People often times seek out youths that are in a vulnerable position, such as those who post sexual content online, have a history of physical or sexual abuse and are willing to discuss sex with strangers via the internet.

-- One out of every 25 youths that receive an online solicitation also find that the person attempts to make contact with them offline.

-- In almost 50 percent of cases in which an internet sex crime occurred, the person used offers of money or gifts when attempting to build a relationship.

Sex crimes are a big issue in the United States, as well as many other parts of the world. The statistics above prove that technology is contributing to this type of crime.

Even though there are situations in which a person should be charged with a sex crime, there is a lot of gray area. For this reason, there are times when a person is targeted by authorities when he or she has done nothing wrong. If a person finds him- or herself in this position, it is important to learn more about the law and how it is interpreted. An attorney who practices in criminal law can help.
