Police in New York City have released dramatic footage captured on a surveillance video that shows an assault on a woman and children in Queens by a 48-year-old man allegedly masquerading as a livery driver.
Police arrested the Yonkers man in connection with the assault that began when he picked up the woman with her children in Manhattan on 207th Street. The 26-year-old woman was accompanied by her three minor children, aged 5, 3 and 1, when she got into what she assumed was a cab shortly before 3 a.m. Aug. 24.
The man drove the family to Elmhurst, behind 7900 Queens Blvd., where he then demanded sex from the woman. He allegedly also threatened to rape her children if she refused. He allegedly went on the attack, yanking the family out of the car and assaulting them.
The woman refused to comply and tried to exit the vehicle with her children. In the video clip, the alleged suspect can be seen elbowing the oldest child in the head and yanking the 3-year-old out of the car before taking off in the fake cab. Her children were treated at Elmhurst Hospital for minor injuries.
Detectives located the alleged assailant at his home in Yonkers and charged him with endangering the welfare of a child and assault. According to Eyewitness News reports, detectives recovered a diamond pendant that belonged to the victim during the arrest.
The man was arraigned on Aug. 29. He posted a bail of $3,500 but remained in custody on a parole violation and has an upcoming court appearance.
The suspect's attorney says that his client admits that he appears on the surveillance video, but that he was only trying to extract customers who refused to pay from his vehicle. He denies all allegations of assault.
Whenever children are involved in alleged crimes, it ups the ante. Those charged with such offenses should avail themselves of legal representation as soon as possible for the best possible resolution.
