Second arrest made in Queens bus slaying

It's been over a year since the fatal shooting of a teenage girl on a Queens bus, but police recently arrested a teenager from Brooklyn, now 16, for her murder. He is being held without bail.

The 14-year-old girl died after being shot in the head after she boarded a Q6 bus in Jamaica near the intersection of Rockaway and Sutphin Boulevards on May 18, 2013. The teen was on her way back home from attending a friend's Sweet 16 party when she was killed.

The 16-year-old who stands accused of pulling the trigger was arraigned last month on charges of criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and second-degree murder. The district attorney's office acknowledges that the girl was not the intended target when the shooter allegedly fired the gun multiple times at the bus and its occupants. The teen's next court appearance will be on Aug. 13.

This is the second arrest in the gun crime case. Last summer, approximately one month after the incident, a 22-year-old man was arrested on charges that included second-degree murder. According to the district attorney involved with the case, the man allegedly took the gun from the just-arrested Brooklyn man and fired several more shots into the bus.

The older man also had a court appearance last month and will be tried next month on the charges. He remains held without bail.

Those charged with first- or second-degree murder face the possibility of life sentences in New York. Simply being arrested does not imply that one is guilty, and each defendant deserves a robust defense in a court of law.
