According to local officials, a 58-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attacking two sisters in Queens in order to rob them of a Social Security check. The man, who has previous troubles with the law dating back to 1989, was arrested for robbery, assault and burglary charges related to the April 5 attack. The incident took place in an apartment building during the afternoon hours.
With a construction helmet on his head and a surgical mask covering his face, he followed the sisters from a bank to their apartment. At that point, he knocked both women over and grabbed for their cash. As a result of the accident, one of the women broke her leg. Officials noted that they later caught the man when they realized the outfit he was wearing was similar to one worn by a Brooklyn burglar.
Officers collected $500 to go towards the senior-citizen victim's medical expenses. A member of the 109th Precinct said, "We put it in a get well soon card. Cops in New York City do things like this each and every day. I love the fact that my guys rose to the occasion."
This type of crime is very serious, regardless of whether it takes place in New York City or another part of the country. Adding robbery and burglary to a list of previous crimes committed in one's lifetime can make it very difficult to avoid harsh penalties when it comes time for a judge to hand down a sentence. The fact that this man has a history of burglary dating back around 25 years means that he will need a solid defense that understands how to handle a defendant with prior convictions.
