71 people arrested in New York for child pornography

| May 30, 2014 | Sex Crimes |

Lately, federal law enforcement officials have been cracking down on child pornography in many parts of the country. The latest roundup in the New York City area netted 71 arrests, including 70 men and one woman.

The investigation began after police made several arrests related to child porn. Investigators went on peer-to-peer networking sites and found that several thousand people are looking for child pornography at any given time. Many of these people are in the New York area.

Those arrested range in age from 20 to 60 years old. They all could face state and/or federal charges for possession and distribution of child pornography as well as additional crimes. Some of those arrested were found with thousands of photos and videos of children in sexually explicit poses. Some of the children were as young as 2 years old. Police seized closed to 600 electronic devices, including computers, smartphones and tablets.

The defendants include people from all walks of life. A Little League coach, rabbi, paramedic, nanny, nurse, police officer and police chief are among those accused of downloading child porn. Some of those arrested were distributing images of their own naked children, while others had previous arrests for pornography and rape.

If the allegations are true, the defendants can face long-lasting punishment. A sex crime conviction can cause damage to reputation, as well as one’s professional life. The investigators will likely pursue aggressive prosecution for those accused of child porn because this type of crime exploits children. A strong defense or cooperation with investigators, may aid in mitigating the possible penalties.
