SERVING NEW YORK WITH INTEGRITY & COMMITMENT

Gun crime, violence in two counties moves in opposite direction

Throughout the New York City area, it is no surprise that gun crime continues to be an issue. This is something that has plagued the area for many years, and despite the best efforts of police it is an issue that will never fully go away.

Our local New York City readers are well aware that some counties have more issues with gun crime and violence than others. When it comes to two counties on Long Island, one is moving in the right direction toward cleaning things up while the other has taken a turn for the worse.

According to statistics provided by local law enforcement officials, shootings increased by 21 percent in Suffolk County last year. On the other side of things, gun violence decreased by 24 percent in Nassau County.

On the surface, it is difficult to pinpoint why these two counties are moving in different directions regarding gun crime and violence. Police feel that this has a lot to do with the growth of drug and gang related activity in Suffolk County.

In 2013, 63 people were shot in Suffolk County, which is up from 52 the prior year.

While these statistics only take into consideration the first 10 months of 2013, it shows that gun crime in Suffolk County and Nassau County is moving in different directions.

Anybody who has been charged with a gun related crime can consult with a criminal law attorney who can explain local laws, protect your rights, and help you get your life back on track.
