Man arrested at airport faces weapons charges

Although gun crime is a broad category, one thing is for sure: This is a serious concern in all parts of the country. From the West Coast to the East Coast and everywhere in between, weapons crimes are a big deal.

Our New York readers in particular will find this story interesting, especially those who have traveled at John F. Kennedy International Airport in the past.

Late last month, a man was arrested at the airport after checking a loaded rifle, along with three additional illegal weapons. According to the Port Authority, the 23-year-old man was arrested after he checked two rifles and two handguns, along with two high-capacity magazines.

It is illegal in New York City to carry a handgun or be in possession of a high capacity magazine. While it is legal to carry shotguns and rifles if the person has a permit and if the gun is unloaded, the man did not meet these guidelines. Additionally, both rifles were defaced with one being painted silver and the other one purple. Also, the serial numbers were covered which is a crime.

At this time, the man faces two counts of criminal possession of a defaced rifle, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of possessing a large capacity magazine. He was in police custody immediately following the arrest.

While the man did not attempt to harm anybody with the weapons, he is facing serious criminal charges as a result of the laws he did break. At this point, there is no additional information on why the man was transporting the weapons via airplane. Each person charged with a crime, however, has the right to a fair and impartial trial, and each person is considered not guilty until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Criminal defense attorneys work to protect the rights of their clients and provide advice and options.
