SERVING NEW YORK WITH INTEGRITY & COMMITMENT

Man shot by police, faces drug charges

A New York man is facing more than just drug possession and weapon possession charges after an altercation with the police. The 31-year-old man will also have to recover from injuries sustained in the confrontation. According to reports, the man argued loudly with police before they returned fire and he was struck in the hip.

Several members of the NYPD responded to a 911 call about a man who was yelling incoherently and waving a handgun menacingly at motorists traveling on Lefferts and Rogers Aves. in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens around 7:15 in the morning. Upon arriving on the scene, the officers ordered the man to drop his 9mm handgun, which he refused to do and yelled more incoherent responses at the officers. The officers responded with a hail of shots fired at the man, with reports stating that they fired a total of 12 shots before the man was struck in the hip and detained. According to the NYPD, it was the first time any of the three officers had fired their weapons while in the line of duty. The man was detained and charged with drug and weapon possession, reckless endangerment and menacing.

While many components of this story are surprising, from the large number of bullets fired by the police officers to the seemingly unhinged nature of the suspect, there is still very little else known about the case, which will be more fully explored as the man goes to trial. It will be up to the courts to decide how severely he should be punished and to consider what, if any, mitigating factors may have led to his bizarre behavior, which may lessen his sentencing. Like this suspect, anyone who is facing criminal charges deserves to be well represented in court, to have the case considered fairly while his or her rights are protected.
