SERVING NEW YORK WITH INTEGRITY & COMMITMENT

Man charged in the murder of New York governor's aide

After a confusing and tumultuous months-long investigation, the authorities have finally charged a young man in association with the shooting death of an aide to Governor Cuomo. According to the news, the defendant is a 24-year-old gang member with a prior arrest record. The aide, Carey Gabay, was reportedly caught in gang-related crossfire during last year's J'Ouvert festivities and took a bullet to the head. He lingered for several days before eventually dying on Sept. 16.

The 24-year-old defendant has been arraigned on charges of murder, reckless endangerment and weapons possession. He was arrested last Thursday and is reportedly just the first of several who may face charges related to Gabay's death. The criminal complaint alleges that the defendant acted in concert with several other individuals. It also says the group was engaged in combat and using deadly weapons.

The alleged evidence against the young man appears meager based on a news story. It includes surveillance photos that were apparently difficult for the authorities to find and a loose admission by the defendant that he had been armed and firing a weapon during the incident. The report also mentions "strong evidence," but no indication of what this evidence consists of was provided.

The murder of a prominent political figure often carries the danger of overzealousness on the part of the state. When someone is famous, the authorities want to close the case quickly so that the public will have something else to talk about. Hopefully, the young defendant in this case is able to acquire a defense attorney who can make certain his rights are not violated while working aggressively on his behalf. This is a goal anyone who has been accused of murder or weapons crime should aspire to.
